I cannot believe it’s been so long since I talked to Gayle Brandeis, author of Fruitflesh, The Book of Dead Birds, and Self Storage (all praised by Barbara Kingsolver, by the way), for the Writer Profile Project. Her interview appeared on March 20, 2008! Check it out here, if you haven’t already. What has she been up to since then? A whole lot! Here’s what Gayle had to say when I asked her for an update:
Gayle says:
My life is completely different from the last time I checked in here–in the past year, I have gotten divorced, gotten pregnant, and gotten married, so it’s been quite a whirlwind, to say the least.
My writerly life has been equally a swirl–my first YA novel, My Life with the Lincolns (about a girl in 1966 Chicago who believes her family is the Lincoln family reincarnated) will be published by Holt next February, and the novel I was working on during our interview (which was originally called Pears, but is now in search of a new title) will be published by Ballantine next July. If anyone can think of a title that somehow combines pears, pairs skating, and humpback whales, please let me know! (Update: the novel will be published as The Delta Girls.)
My current work in progress, Asher Brandeis, is due to make his debut in late November (he’s the most unexpected of all of these releases–I have a son in college and a daughter in high school, and didn’t imagine I’d be starting the mothering journey all over again. I’m chronicling the adventure at a new blog, mamaredux.blogspot.com.)
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to touch base here again, Kelly!
